Well the dust has now settled and the 140 running of the Kentucky Derby is now official.  I discussed at great length last night with both of my sons just how we were going to play the Derby today.  At that time, my top selection CALIFORNIA CHROME, was 3-1.  Since my feelings were so strong about CALIFORNIA CHROME and the fact that I made CALIFORNIA CHROME 3-2 on my own betting line, we came to a final decision that a win bet was the way to go.  As it turned out the final odds were 5/2, still a huge overlay on this horse in my mind.  Let's see just how my predictions did in the big race.
1.  CALIFORNIA CHROME was my top choice and the easiest of winners.  He go a perfect trip (thank you Victor Espinoza) and paid a most generous $7.00.  You will not see 5-2 on this horse in a very long time if ever.

2.  CHITU's breeding came into play I thought.  He was looking very good, he even moved with CALIFORNIA CHROME and was right there until they hit the 1/8 pole and he gave it.  Still, not a bad performance and if he goes in the Preakness shortening up a 1/16 certainly won't hurt. finish: 9th

3.  GENERAL A ROD was pretty far back right from the start.  He tried to rated but was steadied at least twice.  I don't think he can go with the big boys.  He finished 11th.

4. WILDCAT RED had a horrible trip.  H was bumped, he bobbled, and was never in it.  I'll give hime the benefit of the doubt and toss this race.  He wound up 18th but was severely compromised.

5. CANDY BOY was another one who had a bad trip.  Bumped and steadied.  We'll give him another look.

6. DANZA finished a good third.  He'll be back to fight another day.

7. INTENSE HOLIDAY was looking very dangerous to the top of the stretch and weakened in the stretch. All things considered, despite finishing 12th today, IMHO he will be better when he tries shorter distances.

8.  SAMRAAT finished 5th and ran a credible race.  He'll be heard from again in the future.  My guess is that he'll give the Preakness a shot.

9.  VICAR'S IN TROUBLE - I wrote that "Jockey Rosie Napravnik will hard pressed to keep this one from finishing last."  If you were able to bet on who would finish last and took this one, you were a winner.  Otherwise I still don't think this animal will be anything but a Grade III runner at best.

That sums up my Kentucky Derby analysis.
