Bellator 120: Recommended Plays by Boldtiger

The very first PPV by Bellator comes this Saturday on May 17, 2014 at the Landers Center in Memphis, Tennessee. The main event between Michael Chandler and Eddie Alvarez was scratched last week but the company decided to keep the PPV alive by switching some of the matchups. Last time out, a rough losing night as we lost -7.70 units on our UFC Fight Night 40 picks. It doesn't look like we will have a problem getting that back in this event so let's take a look at what's available.

Current Lines
Quinton Jackson -250 vs Muhammed Lawal +210
Michael Chandler -1000 vs Will Brooks +650
Alexander Shlemenko -485 vs Tito Ortiz +385
Blagoi Ivanov -150 vs Alexander Volkov +130
Michael Page -475 vs Ricky Rainey +380
Cheick Kongo -600 vs Eric Smith +400
Shabulat Shamhalaev -300 vs Fabricio Guerreiro +240
Mike RIchman -245 vs Goiti Yamauchi +175
Marcin Held -1300 vs Nate Jolly +700

There are a number of big lines as Bellator tried to make it easy for some of their more established stars to have a good night. I have isolated a couple of plays that should get us the money. I will be avoiding most of the bigger lines and will just play one parlay. My recommended plays for this card will be a total risk of 13 units.

Best Bets
Blagoi Ivanov -150 risk 3 to win 2
My best bet of the night as Ivanov is a much better well rounded fighter than Volkov. Volkov does have a reach advantage and he is probably the better volume striker but Blagoi has the advantage in grappling and he can close the distance easily. Volkov is a passive fighter and is good when his opponents sit back and try to strike with him, Ivanov will keep his unbeaten streak going by taking the fight to Volkov.

Rampage Jackson -250 risk 5 to win 2
King Mo Lawal only has one chance to win this fight, he must take Jackson down and hold him for the majority of 3 rounds. Jackson has a strong chin and he is an aggressive striker who will finish you if he connects. Lawal has "no chin" and will be in big trouble if he tries to strike with Jackson. I think Rampage can stuff a couple of takedowns and after that, Mo will panic and get knocked out. This is a fun fight and Jackson will deliver the goods.

Will Brooks +650 risk 1 to win 6.50
Chandler was training to fight Eddie Alvarez but with very short notice(less than 2 weeks) he will take on big powerful wrestler Will Brooks. I think the pieces are there for a huge upset, Brooks had his own fight switched jumping at the chance to fight for the interim lightweight title. Chandler is a dynamic fighter with all the tools; speed, power, a great chin and desire to win but he is a small lightweight. Brooks has just one loss and he is a big athletic lightweight with a big reach advantage. Brooks is getting overlooked because Chandler is the face of Bellator but I have a feeling that putting Chandler in this fight with little time to prepare might be a huge mistake for the company. If Brooks can survive the early pressure from Chandler, this fight will get very interesting.

Parlay
Alexander Shlemenko -485, Michael Page -475 and Mike Richman -245 risk 4 to win 4.20

Shlemenko has too much heart and advanced striking skills to lose to a washed up Tito Ortiz. Michael Page is one of the hottest prospects in MMA and they brought Rainey in for an easy highlight reel finish for Page. Richman is simply too strong for Yamauchi, who only has a chance if he can get his opponent down on the mat. Richman will cruise to an easy win with his boxing.
